Drain Camera Inspection in Seguin, TX

A push camera runs the full length of your line and records what is in it, what it is made of, and exactly how far down and how deep any defect sits. You get the footage, not a verbal summary of it.

What is a drain camera inspection?

A drain camera inspection is a survey of the inside of a drain or sewer line using a waterproof camera head on a flexible push rod, fed in through a cleanout and recorded on video as it travels. It converts a buried pipe from guesswork into something you can look at.

The camera head carries its own lighting and a distance counter, so every finding is recorded with how far it sits from the access point. A transmitter in the head, called a sonde, lets a receiver on the surface mark the camera's position and depth on the ground above.

What does a camera inspection show you?

A camera inspection shows pipe material, wall condition, joint alignment, standing water, root intrusion, buildup, and the measured position of every defect. Those seven findings are what determine whether a line needs cleaning, repair or nothing at all.

FindingWhat it looks like on screenWhat it means for you
Root intrusionFine white or brown mass entering at a jointCleaning now; joint repair to stop the cycle

When should you get a drain camera inspection?

Get a camera inspection whenever a decision about the line costs more than the inspection does. Six situations meet that test, ordered by how much money the inspection typically saves.

  • Before buying a home. A sewer defect found during the option period is the seller's problem. The same defect found in month three is yours.
  • When a blockage keeps returning. Repeat blockages mean a defect, and the footage tells you where, at what depth, and what kind.
  • Before authorising any excavation. Nobody should quote a dig without a located position and a measured depth.
  • Before hydro jetting an older line. Pressure that is right for PVC is wrong for corroded cast iron. The camera decides.
  • After ground work on the property. A new driveway, pool, foundation pier or utility trench can deflect or crush a line that was previously sound.
  • Before selling. A recorded, clean lateral removes a common late-stage negotiating point, and a known defect disclosed up front costs less than one discovered mid-transaction.

Why a sewer inspection matters more in Seguin than the listing suggests

Seguin's housing stock splits into two groups that need entirely different scrutiny, and a street address does not tell you which one a property belongs to. The median local construction year is 1990, but around one home in ten predates 1950 — roughly 4.5% built before 1940 and another 5.2% by 1949 — while more than twenty new subdivisions have broken ground inside the city limits since 2020.

A pre-1950 property near the Historic District or the older streets around Walnut Branch may still be running on original vitrified clay tile or cast iron. A 2022 build in a new subdivision is on PVC. The first carries real structural risk that a standard home inspection does not cover, because a general home inspector does not put a camera down the sewer lateral.

Soil makes the difference sharper. Northwest Guadalupe County sits on Blackland Prairie calcareous clay, grading to sandy loam toward the southeast. Blackland clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and decades of that movement is what separates joints in rigid older pipe. The same movement is why some 1960s and 1970s properties have laterals in worse condition than their build date implies.

The footage can shift the bill onto the City

The City of Seguin owns and maintains the portion of each customer's sewer service line running from the collection main to the customer's point of connection — typically a cleanout near the front property line. Locating or installing that cleanout is the property owner's responsibility, and city crews will not enter private property to do it.

Under City Ordinance 2016-42, where a camera inspection confirms the defect sits within the public right-of-way, the City schedules and completes the repair at no cost to the owner. That clause is the reason to record the inspection with a measured distance and depth rather than accept a verbal opinion. Without the recording, you have nothing to bring to the City.

Report a suspected city main problem on (830) 401-2404. For your side of the connection, call (830) 264-5425.

What to expect

How the inspection runs

A standard residential lateral inspection takes 45 to 90 minutes.

1

Find the access point

The exterior cleanout is the preferred entry, usually within five feet of the building footprint or near the front property line. Where a property has no cleanout — common in Seguin homes built before 1960 — access is possible through a pulled toilet or a roof vent.

2

Clear enough line for the camera to travel

A camera cannot pass a full blockage or read anything through heavy standing water. If the line is blocked, it gets cleared first, which is why cleaning and inspection are usually booked as one visit.

3

Run the line and record

The camera travels to the connection point with the distance counter running. Pipe material, joint condition, buildup, roots and any standing water are recorded in sequence rather than summarised at the end.

4

Locate and measure depth

Where a defect is found, the sonde in the camera head is picked up by a surface receiver and the position is marked on the ground with a depth reading. This is the step that turns footage into an actionable excavation plan.

5

Report and hand over the file

You receive the recording, the pipe material, the distance and depth of anything found, and a plain recommendation: nothing needed, cleaning, or repair. If it is repair, it is quoted separately so you can compare.

What is a sonde, and why does locating matter?

A sonde is a small transmitter built into the camera head that broadcasts a signal a surface receiver can track, giving the camera's exact position and depth in the ground. Without it you know a defect is 47 feet along the line; with it you know it is under a specific point in the lawn at 5 feet 6 inches down.

That difference is worth more than the inspection itself. It sets the size of the excavation, it decides whether the defect sits on your side of the property line or inside the public right-of-way, and it stops exploratory digging. Any inspection quoted without locating is only half a survey.

What a camera inspection cannot tell you

A camera inspection cannot pass a fully blocked line, measure remaining wall thickness, or prove a pipe is watertight. Being clear about the limits is what separates a diagnostic from a sales tool.

LimitationWhyWhat answers it instead
Cannot pass a full blockageThe camera head is physically stoppedClear the line first, then inspect

How much does a drain camera inspection cost in Seguin?

A drain camera inspection costs $250 to $400 in Seguin as a standalone visit, and less when it is bundled with a cleaning, because the access and setup are already done. Locating and depth measurement should be included rather than charged as an extra.

Common questions

Camera inspection FAQs

Do I get a copy of the footage?

You get the recording, and you should insist on it from any provider. The footage is what a second opinion is based on, what you take to the City if the defect is in the right-of-way, and what a future inspection gets compared against.

Is a sewer inspection part of a normal home inspection?

A general home inspection does not include a sewer camera survey. Home inspectors test fixtures and check for drainage at the fixture, which tells you nothing about the condition of the buried lateral. On any Seguin property built before 1970, book the sewer inspection separately.

Can a camera inspection be done if the line is blocked?

The line has to be cleared before the camera can travel, because the head is physically stopped by the blockage. Booking cleaning and inspection together is usually cheaper than two visits, since access is set up once.

Do I need a cleanout for a camera inspection?

An exterior cleanout is the best access point and makes the inspection faster and cheaper. Where none exists, the camera can go in through a pulled toilet or a roof vent. Installing a cleanout is worth considering on an older property, since it lowers the cost of every future service call.

How deep can the camera go?

A push camera comfortably runs the length of a residential lateral to the connection point, and the sonde locates the head at typical residential burial depths. Distance is limited by bends and by the rod, not by the property size.

Will the camera tell me the pipe material?

Pipe material is one of the clearest things on the footage. Clay tile, cast iron, Orangeburg, ABS and PVC each look distinct on camera, and knowing which one you have sets the service interval, the safe jetting pressure and the realistic remaining life.

What happens if the inspection finds nothing wrong?

A clean result is a useful result. You get a recorded baseline of a healthy line, a documented pipe material, and a reason to stop paying for repeat cleanings you did not need. That is what the inspection was for.

What happens after the inspection

If the footage shows buildup in an otherwise sound pipe, the answer is sewer line cleaning or hydro jetting, depending on whether the material is a single blockage or a coating on the wall. If it shows a separated joint, a belly, corrosion or a collapse, the answer is sewer line repair or replacement, and you will already have the located position and depth the quote depends on.
